APPROACH
The University of Arizona Grand Challenges Research Building is a 125,300 SF interdisciplinary facility created to advance solutions for the eight grand challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including water, energy, climate change, precision medicine, neuroscience, space exploration, quantum information, and material science. The project required a branded environment and wayfinding system that could support complex research programs while expressing the innovative spirit of the work happening within.
A strategy grounded in research, movement, and perception shaped the design approach. Inspired by quantum physics, a faceted visual language is woven through experiential graphics and directional signage. Elevator lobbies feature extruded aluminum floor numbers layered over geometric wall graphics, creating a dynamic illusion that shifts from flat graphic forms at a distance to dimensional objects up close. This multi-sensory experience continues through upper-floor lounges and corridors, where angular motifs guide movement and energize shared spaces. Dichroic film at conference rooms introduces shifting color, connecting privacy needs with the University’s brand palette and the building’s material tones.
OUTCOME
The result is a bold and future-focused environment that transforms navigation into an extension of discovery and innovation. The graphics program creates intuitive orientation across a complex research building while adding depth, movement, and visual intrigue to everyday circulation. By translating advanced scientific ideas into the built environment, the project reinforces the University of Arizona’s leadership in interdisciplinary research and inspires students, faculty, researchers, and visitors alike.
